Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: CD
More Info: Hi, I've had Crohn's disease for 12 years . I had my ileostomy done 3 years ago and wouldn't trade it for anything. I am amazed at how many things I missed when I was 'running' to find a restroom. Having an ileostomy has been a real blessing.
I am also a mother of a very active 3 and a half year old who after she was potty trained wanted a 'bag' just like Mommy. Would love to hear from anyone wishing to talk. Thanks.
Name: John Bennett
Email: bennettjohnr@hotmail.com
Age: 38
Country: Northern Ireland
Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: UC
More Info: I had my ileostomy in March 1998 after having UC for only three months. While I have had little difficulty, physical or psychological, with the ileostomy I have not yet managed to get a handle on those three months prior to surgery when I went badly downhill in such a short period.
I still have some bits left and the tail end has not been
closed up yet. What's left seems to have UC which sometimes
flares up. On a daily basis there is some discharge of blood
and when it plays up there are the cramps of bygone days. I'm
not too happy with this and can't make up my mind when to go
for surgery.

Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: UC
More Info: Have had ileostomy since 1977 and have brought up a family and coped with a stressful but very rewarding career as a teacher. If I can help reassure anyone please let me know as I consider myself an "old" hand now especially on the subject of dehydration bouts and late development of arthritis which my surgeon warned me would develop as long ago as when I first had the op - now 22 years later he has been proved right!!
Name: Kathleen
Email: CntryDnc93@aol.com
Age: 48
Country: USA
Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: UC/Indeterminate Colitis
More Info: I am a 48 year old woman, married. I've had my colon removed 7/96 with my rectum intact due to UC. I have 2 daughters. I have an end ileostomy. I have decided not to have the j-pouch and feel like a minority. I was told I had to have my j-pouch surgeries in 3 surgeries. But after reading and hearing about the complications with the reversals, I decided against it. I experience great health and am enjoying life. I do NOT want to risk that. Or the risk of getting any other complications from more surgery. Because of complications after my colon removal and 2 other surgeries because of them, this contributes to my decision. I have put my story in a site for anyone who's interested in reading it.

Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: UC
More Info: Hello, I have had an ileostomy since November of 1998. I am currently starting my first year of medical school. Having the ostomy makes me psychologically uncomfortable, but it is better than suffering from ulcerative colitis, and having to take all of the various toxic medications used to treat that illness. So far, I am doing well. I lift weights on a regular basis, and am very into exericise and fitness. Look forward to speaking with others who have had this surgery. All the best to you, -Adam

Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: UC
More Info: I kept thinking and hoping and wishing that somehow things would go back to "normal". When I finally came to grips with the fact that "normal" simply wasn't one of the options and dying of colon cancer was...well, that clarified things alot. If anyone has questions or anything feel free to e-mail me. I check it pretty often when my daughter, "I-am-NOT-addicted" is away from the comp' for a few minutes...

Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: CD
More Info: Had Crohn's since I was 15, but it took a visit to my Mother in the United Arab Emerates to get it diagnosed (so much for the N.H.S.) Back in England they left it alone for so long that I had to mave most of my colon removed. After 7 years of dashing to the loo I was given an Ileostomy, and then had to have it redone and severe problems.
Since 1990 I've been clear of problems (apart from a couple of blockages - one on my honeymoon!), gotten married, had two children (well, my wife had them - I had the hard task of feeding her ice throughout the delivery), done parachute jumps, bunjy jumps, put on a lot of weight (I'm now 13.5 stone), and generally got on with my life.
This month (August) I'm due into Gloucester Royal to have my stoma refashioned due to complications.
If anyone wants to e-mail me I'll try to help. The biggest help I even found was talking to people who've had an ostomy and then gotten on with their lives. The worst thing was talking to people who gave in to their IBD - they all sound like Marvin the paranoid android from HHTTG.

Surgery: ??
IBD: ??
More Info: Well, I have had my stoma for about 5 years now, at first I didn't want it but I had no choice. And ever since that day I gave up on life. In turn I have had 2 more surgeries, one of the doctors took out my rectum. I hated myself, At one time I was happy (before surgery) and because of this I lost my wife and the three nephews that I really loved. I had a great job, a nice life, but I couldn't deal with it. I drink and smoke pot and have broken the law many times. I don't go out and hate myself. Although I now have a girlfried, we fight and I treat her bad, because I think she hates or doesn't understand me.......HELP........

Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: ??
More Info: I thought that sinceI have had an ostomy for 40 years that maybe I could give hope to many young or old people. I did have 2 children after the surgery. My husband is deceased but I do have a live in boyfriend. My husband and I were married for 36 years. I had the surgery after we were married. I used to go around and help people, but now they won't let you do that with out a BS degree.
I have 18 inches of bowel left. Get along good now. I was on tpn for 4 years, until they tried tincture of opium. It works well enough to slow the bowel down that I could get off iv's. My weight is maintaining.
Has anyone out there come up with any good sinus medication. Most of what works disolves in the large intestine. Since I don't have one the medication comes through whole. Infact the printing is still on it.
Let me know. Thanks

More Info: I am a wife and mother of two boys(11 and 15). I had my surgery in April of '95. I've noticed that many of the women on this website have given names to the "little fella", (interesting that most have been given male names). My family and I have affectionately named my ostomy friend "Frederick" (why, I'm not sure). He seems to enjoy embarrassing me by vocalizing his opinion on every subject! If anyone out there knows of a way to keep him from being heard when his opinion is not wanted, please feel free to contact me.

Surgery:Ileostomy
IBD:????????
More Info: Had my surgery 20 years ago with no problems until this past year. I was just put on Prednisone due to inflamation from restricted passage way with the intestine. Tried the cortifoam first with no success. I originally thought I had UC 20 yrs ago and had no further worries but since a recent sigmoidoscopy my new doc says its crohns. I'm scared and don't want to go through all the trauma of 20 yrs ago. 3 mos in hospital.
Anyone with alternate health ideas or experience in post operative crohns?

Surgery:Ileostomy
IBD:????????
More Info: I had the op 3 years ago and have been in good health ever since. I suffered prior to the op for about 18 months, to 2 years and was suddenly rushed in to hospital when my colon ruptured and I developed septicaemia. I was in intensive care for about 4 weeks. I was told afterwards that it was touch and go and I nearly died.
I cope very well with my "bag" etc and lead a normal life.

Surgery: ileostomy
IBD: CD
More Info: I am female. I had my original surgery done in 1980 at age 20. I had an ileostomy done in the fall of 1980 for Crohn's. Then in 1988 had two more surgeries to remove abcesses and also to have my stoma redone as it had herniated. I think it had because I had my daughter in January of that year. I had a difficult delivery. Anyway, since then have been fine. I haven't been on any meds since my original surgery. I do have problems with my joints, most especially my knees, and am finally
considering Celebrex or some other form of relief.
Great site. Thanks so much for taking the time to do it.
