Email: CARUGAMA@AOL.COM
Age: 65
Country: Jeffersonville, USA
Surgery: Colostomy
IBD: Cancer
More Info: I have had my colostomy for almost 7 years.I had cancer of the colon and rectum. I irrigate every other day. The whole idea of having to have the colostomy blew my mine. I thought I would never leave my house. Now after all the years it is just part of my everyday life. Sometimes I do get frustrated, but, if having it means being here, it is all worth it. I am cancer free, and never had to have radiation, chemo or medication. I am just so happy to be alive. I would love to hear from some colostomy buddies.

Name: Susan
Email: goddess@zeal.net
Age: 23
Country: Austin, TX... well, almost
ICQ: 13064813
Surgery: Colostomy
IBD: CD
More Info: Hi. I was diagnosed with Crohn's when I was 12. In 1993, I had a bowel resection. They used titanium staples to close my wound, however left me open to heal.. ugh! Nowadays, my titanium staples have surfaced and are about to puncture my skin. FUN.
Currently (and since 1997), I have been having a flare in my rectum. Actually, the lowest part of the rectum...the part that counts the most. :\ I have a severe, "rare" rectal stricture and SEVERE scarring. I also have about 4-5 skin tags clumped together outside my bum-hole. I also have 3 fissures right now. I have been on the medicated enemas, Remicade, and every other "wonder" drug, but nothing has helped. Currently, I have been getting rectally dilated about once a month. Saw my doctor last week (2/16/01) and he said to start considering colostomy. They have said this before, but it had always been avoided. This time, I think it's going to have to happen. The scarring is just so bad, I don't think there's any other way to fix it. I plan on trying to get a definite second opinion at one of the famed clinics, but haven't set up an appointment...yet.
Please feel free to write me. I do have some apprehensions about getting a colostomy, but if it's for the best, then I guess it has to happen. Those of you who have Crohn's with colostomies, do you ever irrigate and cap off for those intimate moments? Just curious. BTW, we're (my husband, Isaac & I) hoping to try to get pregnant next year. We'll see what happens. Thanks for your support.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am totally dazed with the fact that I have a colostomy bag. I have been recently diagnosed with colon cancer (July 3rd 2000)and I have so many questions about living with this bag on me, let alone the after effects of chemotherapy.

Also, if anyone has any questions to ask me or just need some to talk to please feel free...I know I really needed someone to talk to when I was diagnosed.

Name: Jeannie Lambert
Email: thefirms@aol.com
Age: 38
Country: Gainesville,Fl USA
Surgery: colostomy
IBD: CD
More Info: Surgery date was 2 of March 2000. New patient with no idea how to adjust. I need discrete help as all my friends do not know yet. In some odd way I feel better (physically) than I have in years...now how do I get my mental health to catch up?

Name: Dorothy
Email: piecuch@uswest.net
Age:49
Country:USA
IBD:IBS, incontinence
Surgery:Colostomy
More Info: I need to decide what to do. Colostomy is suggested. I'm either reclusive at home or go out to someone's bathroom! Rectal surgery failed, apparently there is nerve/muscle damage from birthing. I'm more concerned with the after effects than surgery itself. I've had so many surgeries(from head to toe)... How do you dress - special hints/tricks so bag isn't obvious? Bathing suits? Sex? Seems like it would be totally gross for the significant other? (My "saint" has already adjusted to double mastectomy) What about recovery time? How long to adapt to procedures? Cost of supplies? What complications, immediate and down the road?

Name:Sandee Morrill
Email: Sandee52@mindless.com
Age:47
Country:Twain Harte, Calif.
IBD:CD
Surgery:Colostomy
More Info: After having my colostomy in April of 1999, I was looking forward to a fuller..happier and healthier life. Unfortunately that has not happened. I've had a lot of problems since that have been a discouragement. A week after the ostomy my rectum (or what was) came open and after months of different treatments I had to go have surgery to "sew me back up". A week after that another place (above the new sewn site) just split open. It has been quite distressful to walk around with an open and tender "bottom" for months on end. My surgeon informed me that when the rectum was removed all of the crohns wasn't as the lab work came back positive for crohns. Now I am having MAJOR symptoms again..blood work does not look good and it looks as though I am back to square one? I knew that I had a 10-30% chance of the disease returning BUT I didn't expect this!

More Info:Ok, I don't have a colostomy, but my father does. He is having some tough time and me also. This site has helped me helping my father. I would really need your support, so please feel free to email me.

Name:Susan D. St. Jon
Email: stj2trvl@gte.net
Surgery: colostomy
IBD: ???
More Info:Hi,

Does anybody know why the BCIR is not recommended for those with colostomy only those with ileostomy?

Have my colostomy since 1970 (28 then and 56 now). After all these years am real tired of irrigating daily and sometimes twice daily. It would seem that converting to the BCIR would be easier as I get older.

Do you have any knowledge on this subject?

More Info:On April 7, l999 I had surgery to remove my rectum and anus and to create a colostomy. This was necessary due to a diagnosis of cancer. I am a L.I.S.W. and my job includes providing grief counseling for clients. Boy - I am much better at this now, having had more experience in the trenches.

Name: Christine
Email:CMaxw96186@aol.com
Country: California, USA
Surgery: Numerous resections and a colostomy
IBD: Diverticulitis
Age: 49
More Info: I recently underwent my 4th surgery for diverticulitis. I had my 1st colostomy when I was 41 due to a rupture of my colon from diverticulitis. It was reversed 10 months later. That didn't work too well.I had numerous attacks over the years and continued to lose large portions of my colon until I ultimately had about 2 feet remaining. This last surgery was initially to install an ileostomy, but the surgeon was unable to do so, as I had so many adhesions that my abdomen was "frozen". The adhesions had grown together. UGH! So, hence the colostomy and fistula. The fistula isn't too bad. Just drains and is a bit bothersome at times. It's amazing what people can adjust to!
